NCS Color Finder

The Natural Color System (NCS) is a proprietary perceptual color model developed in Sweden that describes colors based on how humans perceive them: blackness (darkness), chromaticness (saturation), and hue (color). NCS is the official color standard in Sweden (since 1979), Norway, Spain, and South Africa. It's widely used in architecture, interior design, and construction because it provides a universal language for color specification that translates consistently to physical paints and materials worldwide.

NCS notation has 4 parts: (1) Nuance 'S' = Standard shade (most common), (2) Blackness '20' = 20% black content, (3) Chromaticness '50' = 50% chromatic color intensity, (4) Hue 'Y50R' = Yellow with 50% Red. The remaining percentage (100 - 20 - 50 = 30%) is whiteness. This notation precisely describes how the color appears to the human eye in terms of darkness, saturation, and hue composition. For example, S 2050-Y50R is a vibrant orange with moderate darkness.

This tool includes 92 representative colors from the NCS 1950 atlas, covering all major hue families (Y, YR, R, RB, B, BG, G, GY) and neutrals (N). The complete NCS 1950 atlas contains 1,950 standardized colors sampled at 5% intervals for blackness and chromaticness. An updated NCS 2022 edition added 100 more colors for a total of 2,050 standardized colors. This browser provides accurate RGB/HEX mappings for the most commonly used architectural colors.

You can use the HEX/RGB values from this tool for digital mockups and reference, but be aware that NCS colors are formulated for physical materials (paint, textiles, plastics) viewed under standard illumination, not screens. Computer screens can only approximate NCS colors using RGB values - they cannot reproduce true NCS colors exactly. For architectural and construction projects, always specify the NCS notation and verify with physical NCS swatches. For pure digital work (websites/apps), use RGB or HEX values directly instead of NCS.

NCS uses 8 main hue families based on the 4 elementary colors (Yellow, Red, Blue, Green) and their intermediates: Y (Yellow), YR (Yellow-Red/Orange), R (Red), RB (Red-Blue/Purple), B (Blue), BG (Blue-Green/Cyan), G (Green), GY (Green-Yellow/Lime), and N (Neutral/Grayscale). Within each hue, numbers indicate the percentage mix (e.g., Y50R = 50% Yellow, 50% Red = Orange). This perceptual system matches how humans naturally describe colors and makes it easy to find related color families.
